The Joint National Listenership figures are in and they have been sparking interest and competition amongst radio broadcasters, producers, and executives alike. Wewill see the Irish heavyweights (not forgettingthe bantamweights) battling against each other for listeners and ratings. However the eyes of Irish broadcasting are currently fixed on the biggest contenders, but who has won bragging rights for this round? The biggest competition arises between state broadcaster’s RT Radio 1 and commercially owned Today FM. The average weekday listenership figures for all adults aged 15+ shows that RT are still topping the polls, up 24% from March 2015, while Today FM is up 13%. Fellow commercial broadcaster Newstalk 106-108fm are up 11% with 2fm achieving the same. The average weekday listenership between the ages of 15-24 unsurprisingly showed that 2fm ranked highest at 12%, with Today FM fast in pursuit at 9%. RT Radio 1 and Newstalk shared a score of 4% for this category. In Co. Dublin Spin 103.8 dominated the 15-24 age group with 42% of people tuning in. FM104 were close behind at 32%. The state-owned RT Radio 1 reigned supreme in the 35+ category with their national percentage of listeners being 42%. All others in this category are left trailing behind; Newstalk 13%, Today FM 12%. However, in the 15-34 age group Today FM won out at 15%. Following in close second place were 2fm at 14%, and Newstalk, and Radio 1 at 8%, and 7% respectively. The national share of listening has also been revealed for ages 15+ and we can announce that RT Radio 1 are still on top at 21.9%; Newstalk at 6.6%; Today FM at 7.9%: and 2fm at 7.1%.
